FUCHS LUBRICANTS assists HVAC sector to navigate changing regulations
The European Union’s increasingly stringent F-gases regulation continues to pose new challenges for the refrigeration industry. Enacted to reduce the environmental impact of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), this regulation mandates the phasedown of HFCs with high Global Warming Potential (GWP) and encourages the transition to sustainable alternatives. For the HVAC industry, these changes necessitate cutting-edge solutions in refrigeration oils, and FUCHS LUBRICANTS SOUTH AFRICA is stepping up as a critical partner in this sector.
In response to the European Climate Law and the need for stronger climate action, the European Commission reviewed the 2014 F-gas Regulation, proposing a new regulation to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. Building on the success of its predecessor, the updated F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 was adopted on 7 February 2024 and came into effect on 11 March 2024. [1]
The RENISO product range from FUCHS offers synthetic lubricants specifically designed to meet the stringent requirements of modern refrigeration systems, including those adapting to the EU’s evolving refrigerant landscape. These oils align with the latest sustainability standards, supporting the shift toward environmentally friendly refrigerants while ensuring optimal equipment performance.
FUCHS provides a diverse portfolio of synthetic lubricants based on advanced chemistries such as polyol esters (POE), polyalphaolefins (PAO), alkyl benzenes (AB), and polyalkylene glycols (PAG). These solutions ensure reliable performance for a broad spectrum of refrigerants, including conventional HFCs like R134a, R410A, and R407C; natural refrigerants such as NH₃ (ammonia), CO₂, and hydrocarbons; and emerging hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants, including R1234ze and R1234yf.
“Our development laboratories are actively testing HFO mixtures to ensure that we are always ahead of industry requirements,” comments Ashleigh Pollen, Industrial and Speciality Manager at FUCHS. The RENISO range is engineered to provide superior miscibility, stability, and lubrication across a wide temperature range, ensuring compatibility with both legacy and next-generation refrigerants.
FUCHS’ commitment to innovation is exemplified by its advanced in-house testing capabilities. Through Sealed Tube Apparatus Tests, the thermal and chemical stability of refrigerant-oil mixtures is thoroughly assessed to ensure long-term reliability. Miscibility and solubility tests are conducted to guarantee optimal interaction between refrigerants and lubricants, even under challenging conditions.
High-pressure autoclave trials simulate real-world operating environments, verifying the durability of refrigerant-lubricant combinations. In addition, FUCHS employs custom test rigs that replicate specific customer setups, enabling precise lubricant recommendations and continuous product enhancement. These rigorous testing protocols ensure that FUCHS products deliver unmatched performance and reliability in demanding HVAC applications, from extreme cold to high-pressure scenarios.
The adoption of synthetic lubricants is essential in addressing the challenges posed by the EU’s F-gases regulation and the transition to sustainable refrigerants. Synthetic oils offer remarkable thermal stability, allowing HVAC systems to withstand higher operating temperatures without compromising performance. Their superior lubricating properties reduce friction and wear, enhancing system efficiency and minimising energy losses.
With exceptional oxidative resistance, synthetic lubricants extend equipment life by reducing wear and maintenance requirements, ensuring reliable operation over time. Moreover, these lubricants maintain excellent flow characteristics in low-temperature environments, making them ideal for HVAC systems in colder climates. Their compatibility with various seals and materials further ensures the reliability and longevity of HVAC components, even under the most demanding conditions. Through these innovative features, FUCHS synthetic lubricants provide the HVAC industry with the tools to achieve sustainability goals while maintaining high performance and efficiency.
“The superior properties of synthetic lubricants, combined with our expertise, ensures that HVAC systems operate efficiently and sustainably,” says Pollen. As the HVAC industry navigates the complexities of changing regulations, FUCHS’ innovative lubricants ensure compliance without compromising performance. “We offer extensive support to clients in their transition to sustainable refrigerants to enhancing system efficiency and longevity,” concludes Ashleigh.
