Given the criticality of variable-speed drives (VSD) in industrial and process automation systems, it is non-negotiable that there are aftersales services, backup support, warranty centres and repair services. This led to the introduction of industrial equipment supplier BMG’s specialist VSD workshop – at its Cape Town engineering facility – which celebrates its first full year of operation.

Most customers are adamant in selecting only “credible suppliers” for specialised and expensive equipment, such as VSDs, says BMG electronics business unit manager David Dyce.

Consequently, the workshop is an approved warranty centre for BMG’s VSD products from various original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Danfoss, Vacon and Synergy.

“Our product range is able to cater for most industries and applications, and the products have the necessary certifications to conform to various industry standards,” explains Dyce.

Further, this electromechanical facility is manned by a team of trained experts who offer specialist services to customers throughout the Western Cape.

“It should be noted that BMG technicians are sent to the Danfoss training facilities for specialised training, in addition to participating in online training when new products are introduced.”

This ensures that technicians can quickly diagnose and rectify problems, thereby ensuring that machines and/or plants are back online in an “acceptable period”.

“It is critical that customers have maximum plant availability. Local workshops feed into this requirement, and this gives clients peace of mind that they will be supported,” adds Dyce.

The facility provides services such as repairs, maintenance, option fitment, preloading software or upgrades, as well as testing applications and small-panel manufacturing.

The team also provides on-site technical assistance for troubleshooting, commissioning, maintenance and repairs.

Moreover, the facility is conveniently located, while its size ensures that is stocked with the full range of BMG VSDs for customers from all industries, including the marine sector.

Dyce elaborates that the workshop has aligned with BMG’s aim to expand its footprint and improve the localisation of stock and services for its customer base.

BMG’s branch network in the Western Cape also stocks numerous VSD ranges, offering a variety of voltages and power sizes to meet immediate market requirements.

Authorised Service Partner

In 2019, BMG became the first authorised Danfoss DrivePro service partner in Africa, with this certification having been renewed by Danfoss Drives every year since then.

“Our prestigious appointment gives customers the assurance that BMG meets the OEM’s stringent requirements to offer customised support and technical assistance for the Danfoss VLT and Vacon frequency converters,” says Dyce.

He adds that, as a DrivePro partner, BMG is authorised to perform plant audits for installed equipment and provide critical information regarding the redundancy of old equipment, spare parts availability and new-unit replacement.

Consequently, BMG customers can plan for maintenance and replacements to ensure optimal uptime.

“Danfoss DrivePro services, which cover the entire life cycle of Danfoss and Vacon alternating current drives, are designed to improve productivity and performance, minimising downtime and giving peace of mind to every user.”

Dyce concludes that BMG has made a significant investment in distribution, engineering facilities and technical skills – such as the establishment of electronic workshops and technical resources centres – in strategic parts of Africa.
