South Africa’s ongoing water challenges are exacerbated by ageing water infrastructure, owing to failing asset performance and tardy maintenance, in relation to plant efficiency and stable water supply, says energy, automation and digitalisation specialist company Schneider Electric’s water and wastewater (WWW) segment leader Peter Marumong. Consequently, the Schneider Electric WWW segment is offering municipalities automation, telemetry and analytical platform solutions to digitalise their respective water operations, including pumpstations, reservoirs, treatment plants and distribution networks.

The MoU will facilitate collaboration between the two institutions in research, knowledge-sharing and capacity-building. “It is a moment to pause and celebrate the achievements of 30 years of democracy,” noted HSRC CEO Professor Sarah Mosoetsa. “It is also not just a ceremonial signing of an MoU but a partnership of like-minded institutions with an aligned vision of development, capacity building, and innovation. It was fitting that the closest locality was named Sirig Taghat, meaning "no water, no goat" in Tamasheq, the local Berber language. But the arduous three-day off-road journey in 2022 through harsh desert terrain paid off with the discovery of fossils of the magnificent fish-eating dinosaur Spinosaurus mirabilis, one of the largest meat-eaters ever to walk the Earth.

While automation, Internet-of-Things (IoT) connectivity and AI are increasingly embedded in global materials-handling solutions, uptake in South Africa has been slower than anticipated. In this regard, Nemukula notes that many local operators remain reluctant to move away from established practices, particularly where safety and reliability are perceived to be well managed under conventional operating models.

Mining Indaba organiser Hyve Group has described AI as the mining industry’s “next strategic battleground”, and a key focus of the 2026 Indaba is to foster a conversation that “moves beyond hype [and speculation] to hard realities as leaders dissect the rise of Agentic AI”.

This will allow them to monitor active wildfires across the whole of the country. This is currently particularly relevant to the Western Cape province, where summer is the dry season, and where there have been a series of major wildfires in recent weeks. AFIS provides near-real-time fire detection, with updates every half-hour or so, as new satellite imagery becomes available. It also provides an alert capability, notifying users of active wildfires, allowing early warning and rapid response. It can be viewed via the AFIS Map Viewer.

The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) has been used, by international astronomers, to solve a “cosmic mystery”. Located in the South African Astronomical Observatory complex at Sutherland in the Karoo, in the Northern Cape province, SALT was used to observe one of the most extreme stars ever found, designated WOH G64, which lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC – a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way). WOH G64 is one of the coolest but also most luminous, as well as dustiest, red supergiant stars in the LMC. This kind of star ends its days in a core-collapse supernova explosion. And, over the past ten years WOH G64 has faded to a significant degree, while its pulsations have been suppressed, and the spectrum of the light that it emits has become dominated by emission lines from ionised gas, rather than those typical of red supergiants. Moreover, in 2024, it was discovered that the star was being veiled by a fresh dust cloud.

One of the biggest studies yet conducted of the DNA of ancient Southern African hunter-gatherer people has upended previous theories about the origin of the Khoe and San peoples. Conducted by population geneticists from Uppsala University in Sweden, and a cognitive archaeologist from the University of Johannesburg, the study involved the analysis of the DNA of 28 people who lived in Southern Africa from 1 200 years to only a few hundred years ago. “[T]hese genomes provide an unadmixed view of early Southern African population history,” pointed out study co-author Carina Schlebush. “With increasing numbers of high-coverage ancient genomes, we are now approaching true population-level insights. This gives us a much clearer foundation for understanding how modern humans evolved across Africa.”

UK-based international non-profit organisation, the Earth Rover Programme, which currently operates in Colombia, Kenya and the UK, has globally launched its “soilsmology” initiative, to allow even poor farmers to be able to assess their soils accurately, and in a non-invasive manner. And farmers using this technology will also be able to form a global “citizen-scientist” soil data network, using open-source encrypted platforms. The result would be a trusted and shared global soil map. “It’s really challenging to know what’s going on underneath our feet,” pointed out University of Greenwich Sustainable Agriculture and Biodiversity Professor Jacqueline Hannam, who is part of the Earth Rover Programme. “The Earth Rover Programme’s methods have enormous potential to quantify key soil properties such as depth, bulk density, and water movement – without putting a spade into the ground. This breakthrough is urgently needed to reverse soil degradation and support sustainable management.”
