Engineering group DOK-ING is transforming the underground mining industry with its innovative electric robotic NRE fleet, designed specifically for platinum and gold extraction in South Africa.
These robotic systems will be a highlight at DOK-ING’s Electra Mining Africa stand, offering a glimpse into the future of mining technology.
The NRE robots, standing at just 65 cm tall, are capable of accessing the world’s lowest mines and operating on slopes up to 22º, far surpassing the 10º limit of conventional machines. This capability not only sets new standards in the underground mining sector, but also opens up previously inaccessible or unprofitable deposits for exploitation.
“The possibility of working on higher slopes allows for the exploitation of deposits that are inaccessible or unprofitable using conventional machines, resulting in significant saving, owing to greater flexibility in mine design,” explains DOK-ING mining programme manager Luka Petro.
A significant advantage of the NRE fleet is its electric drive, which eliminates noise and exhaust gases in confined spaces, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the mining process. Further, the mechanisation of production increases efficiency and drastically reduces risks for workers.
“Mechanisation drastically reduces risks for workers, thereby increasing their safety,” adds Petro.
The NRE fleet’s remote-controlled systems further enhance safety by eliminating the need for personnel in unsecured areas. The fleet consists of three robotic systems: the NRE Dozer, NRE Support Rig, and NRE Drill Rig. These robots seamlessly complete drilling, cleaning, and anchoring processes, ensuring a safer and more efficient mining operation. Fully automated roof drilling and anchoring operations add another layer of safety and efficiency.
The technology enables mechanised exploitation in ultralow profiles (0.9 m to 1.7 m), increasing productivity and ore concentration, while reducing capital investment and operating costs by up to 35% and 30%, respectively. The innovation shortens the payback period from 11 years to five years, highlighting the significant economic impact of DOK-ING’s technology.
