Tangguh Ubadari, CCUS, compression project, Indonesia

Name of the Project
Tangguh Ubadari, CCUS, compression project (UCC).

Location
Tangguh liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Papua Barat, Indonesia.

Project Owner/s
bp is the operator of Tangguh LNG, acting on behalf of Tangguh Production Sharing Contract Partners. bp (40.22%) operates Tangguh, with partners MI Berau (16.30%), CNOOC Muturi (13.90%), Nippon Oil Exploration (12.23%), KG Berau Petroleum (8.56%), KG Wiriagar Petroleum (1.44%) and Indonesia Natural Gas Resources Muturi (7.35%).

Project Description
The UCC project has been designated as a national strategic project by the government of Indonesia and represents the continued development of Tangguh, following the addition of the third LNG train, which started operation in 2023 and brought total plant liquefaction capacity to 11.4-million tonnes a year.

The project – which comprises the Ubadari gasfield development, enhanced gas recovery through first carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) and onshore compression – expands and uses existing infrastructure at the Tangguh LNG facility.

The project aims to be the first CCUS facility developed at scale in Indonesia, with potential for sequestering an estimated 15-million tonnes of CO2 in its initial phase, and potentially more, considering the large CO2 storage capacity of the area.

Potential Job Creation
The project continues to support local workforce development, with 99% of its operations’ workforce comprising Indonesians, including 70% Papuans. The project is on track to achieve an 85% Papuan workforce in Tangguh by 2029.

Capital Expenditure
$7-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Production at the Ubadari field is expected to start in 2028.

Latest Developments
The Tangguh Production Sharing Contract Partners announced a final investment decision on the project in November 2024.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
JGC Holdings Corporation (onshore engineering, procurement, construction and installation contract).
