Chrome market outlook

21st February 2025

Font size: - +

This article has been supplied.

During the 3rd quarter, chrome ore production and trade increased year-on-year, driven by higher FeCr production in China and Indonesia, while India and Europe recorded declines due to weak demand and mounting global competition. On a quarterly basis, global chrome ore and FeCr production declined in Q3, reflecting the combination of a decline in prices, oversupply and sluggish demand.

Although stainless steel production in China is increasing, FeCr production and imports continue to exceed consumption, exacerbating the surplus and accelerating the downward price trend. Several smelters have suspended operations

Indonesia is becoming a major importer of chrome ore with growing HC FeCr production reducing the need for FeCr imports but increasing the demand for raw materials.

Meanwhile, the LC FeCr market is shifting, with India and Kazakhstan gaining market share and China's exports falling sharply.

For a more in-depth outlook across the supply chain, we encourage you to register for the International Chromium Development Association conference, which will take place in Ulanqab, China on 13-15 May 2025
