Johannesburg-based research institute Coaltech has signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) to support research and innovative solutions towards Just Energy Transition (JET) work in the province.

The organisations seek to unlock green economy opportunities, as well as to address the socioeconomic and environmental challenges associated with South Africa’s coal mining sector – including remediating and repurposing of land.

Some of the repurposing opportunities include biofuel production, industrial hemp production, mine water reticulation, repurposing of decommissioned coal-fired power stations to renewable sources and ash beneficiation.

Mpumalanga hosts 65 of the country’s 78 operating coal mines, comprising 80% of national coal production, making coal a key driver of the local economy.

“This regional concentration underscores the need for targeted and collaborative strategies to ensure an inclusive process to create alternative economic pathways,” says Coaltech.

The partnership between the institute and MGCA aims to address these unique challenges and opportunities, through a project-based approach. The MoA lays the foundation for initiatives in critical areas to foster economic development, empower local communities and position Mpumalanga as a hub for green innovation and sustainability.

The model may well serve as an example for other regions in South Africa and the world confronted with JET-related challenges.

“By leveraging Mpumalanga’s unique position within the coal industry, we aim to harness green economy opportunities that contribute to environmental sustainability while creating meaningful economic and social value for the region and its communities,” Coaltech CEO Avhurengwi Nengovhela comments.

MGCA CEO Nkosinathi Nkonyane adds that by combining MGCA’s expertise in project facilitation and funding with Coaltech’s capabilities in research and implementation, the partners can build a robust framework for advancing JET initiatives that will have a lasting impact on the region.

The organisations aim to contribute to a legacy of innovation and resilience for Mpumalanga and South Africa as a whole.
