Gauteng e-Government Department invests in cybersecurity
Gauteng’s e-Government Department is planning to increase cybersecurity for the Gauteng provincial government (GPG).
The GPG collects, manages and stores significant volumes of sensitive data, from resident records and financial transactions to infrastructure control systems.
To avoid security breaches with far-reaching effects, the e-Government Department, in line with its mandate, must prioritise the protection of sensitive data.
Robust cybersecurity initiatives will be built and managed to ensure the protection of citizen data and the province’s government systems.
The department's total budget allocation for its various initiatives is R1.7-billion, a portion of which will be allocated to guarantee that the province government's cybersecurity is well-equipped to withstand cyberattacks.
“Over the years, the department has successfully developed the provincial cybersecurity strategy and the Gauteng Security Operations Centre. These have played a critical role in safeguarding the provincial government against cybercrime,” the department said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to e-Government MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini, the provincial government is aware of cyberattacks formed against governments, which can cripple the systems of government by compromising citizen privacy and disrupting government functions.
“As a department housing critical state resources, we must remain vigilant. The recent cyberattack on strategic national departments underscores the vulnerability of government institutions. Hence, we must cover all angles to secure our infrastructure,” Dhlamini said.
The department's proactive actions are intended to ensure that the provincial government's networks, data and systems are safe and robust to deal with cyberthreats.
