The Rapid Product Development Association of South Africa (RAPDASA) announced on Monday that the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) had approved funding for the fourth phase of the Collaborative Programme in Additive Manufacturing (CPAM). Additive manufacturing (AM) is popularly known as 3D printing, and RAPDASA is the representative body for the AM sector in South Africa.

The CPAM was first launched ten years ago, in 2014/15, and actually preceded the publication of the South African Additive Manufacturing Strategy. The DSI both commissioned the strategy and has always funded the CPAM.

Since it was launched, the CPAM has, in RAPDASA’s words, grown into “a successful programme supporting new knowledge generation in the field of AM and supported a large cohort of post-graduate students that are doing post-graduate research projects based on research questions identified for both metal AM and polymer AM technology value chains”.

The CPAM Phase 4 has four focus areas or programmes. Number one is “industry-led AM research and development (R&D) projects”; number two is “post-graduate R&D projects”; number three is “mentorship support projects”; and number four is CPAM small, micro- and medium-sized enterprise support projects. The open call for proposals for projects under the first, second and third programmes is now live. The closing date for proposals is September 20, this year, and no late applications will be considered.
