Name of the Project
Muizenberg beachfront upgrade.

Location
Muizenberg, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
City of Cape Town.

Project Description
The project involves major upgrades to public amenities and replacing the aged seawalls on the Muizenberg beachfront.

The upgrades will take place at Surfer’s Corner, on the western part of the beachfront along Beach road, including the connection to the St James walkway, the Surfer’s Corner steps, the main promenade area and the existing informal gravel parking area along the railway line and eastern parking area.

The project will be completed in phases, with the first work starting along the western section of Surfer’s Corner, adjacent to the railway line.

The project includes:

  • replacing the wooden coastal protection structure along the promenade with a stepped revetment, which will include a 3-m-wide promenade with a universally accessible beach ramp.
  • formalising the existing gravel parking area along the railway line with clay pavers, in the same style as the current main parking area.
  • demolishing and reconstructing the ablution facility, opening up more beach space.
  • demolishing and reconstructing the pergola further landward to allow for the construction and setback of the new revetment structures and promenade.
  • upgrading the playground.
  • resurfacing of paved areas with clay pavers.
  • refurbishing the station forecourt to make it more pedestrian friendly.
  • realigning the underground sewer and stormwater mains.
  • relocating the eight beach huts to the central plaza.
