Smaller firms now also demanding full enterprise resource planning solutions

7th December 2012

Small and medium-sized companies are demanding fully fledged enterprise- resource planning (ERP) software tools to support their businesses, with interest kindled by the market’s increasing familiarity with the use of ERP systems in corporate environments, says business software company Syspro CEO Phil Duff.

These systems can provide the information necessary for these small companies to make informed decisions to stay profitable and remain competitive in their industries.

“Manufacturers, for example, use ERP systems to become more efficient, reduce costs and provide the necessary information to make informed strategic decisions,” he says.

The real-time nature of ERP systems means that information on production, input costs, energy and water costs and a host of different information pieces can be considered in the context of a business’s performance, while the employee workflow functions of the system can determine staff productivity, Duff notes

Further, Syspro’s ERP system does not require capital-intensive infrastructure and can be deployed even in small offices to enable companies to use the same business intelligence functionality that large-scale companies use, he says.

Syspro has identified the shift to a mobile work culture as a significant trend in the ERP industry and is able to support small to large businesses using customer-facing mobile applications, such as the successful M-pesa mobile money used in Africa, and integrate the transactions into the company’s back-office reporting functions, says Duff.

A largest dairy in Kenya procures 95% of its milk from small-scale producers, creating the largest farmers’ network in the region. The company has improved its processes to overcome logistical challenges of getting the milk from various catchment areas to the factory and graded according to set parameters, all within three hours of milking.

“The dairy requires the efficient manage- ment of available resources, the use of latest technologies and awareness of local and global trends, as well as keeping track of several thousand suppliers and several hundred agents and sub agents at all times. Syspro’s systems scale up to meet these needs” explains Duff.

The company provides cloud-based ERP services for mobile functionality, enabling companies to extract data from field workers and mobile staff, says Syspro marketing director Meryl Malcomess.

“Syspro’s ERP systems enable compa- nies to easily measure their energy flows and people processes and provides company officers with information to make business decisions or decisions on the performance of individuals, enabling the officers to identify who is performing well, who needs more training or who needs to be reassigned,” explains Malcomess.

“Syspro does not split its system into different modules, but rather tailors the system to the business in question. Companies can use our systems and remain agile because all our systems have a single ‘software DNA’ that we can effectively support from the 61 countries in which we operate.

“We are specifically focused on the vari- ous manufacturing industries, but also support distribution, logistics and wholesaler industries,” notes Duff.

Syspro was established in 1978 in South Africa and has extensive knowledge of operating on the continent, he adds.

“Our geographic footprint is an important advantage for us and we foresee strong growth, especially in the mobile ERP space,” concludes Duff.
