Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS) has, in partnership with Darling Green Country Estate and TouchPoint Energy, commissioned a 1 MW solar plant in Darling, in the Swartland municipality, in the Western Cape.

The plant came on stream in March and supplies clean energy to the newly developed Darling Green Country Estate. It is powered by the recently established green energy provider, Darling Green Utility.

Some

of the surplus energy from the plant will be sold to the Swartland municipality under a three-year power purchase agreement.

By the end of this period, the estate is expected to have expanded sufficiently to consume most of the energy produced.

SPS was selected to implement the project as a one-stop shop for both technical solutions and funding.

Touchpoint Energy (formerly Genesis) played its part in the project’s early stages by assisting with its conceptualisation, design and legal documentation.

The Darling Green solar project protects residents from Eskom loadshedding during stages 1 and 2.

Plans are under way for the development of an additional 5 MW solar farm adjacent to the 1 MW plant.

Darling Green Solar has secured approval to access the Eskom grid in Darling, allowing for the wheeling of 5 MW of power to customers connected to the Eskom grid in other parts of the country.

The 5 MW project is expected to be commissioned by the middle of next year.
