Name of the Project
Alginate production plant.

Location
Freeport Saldanha Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Western Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
South African company Alkelp.

Project Description
The project involves the development of Southern Africa’s first alginate production facility.

The initiative is intended to elevate South Africa's presence in the global alginate market, progressing beyond traditional applications in fertilisers, abalone feed and biostimulants.

The plant will process kelp sourced from licensed South African suppliers to produce alginate and derivative products. It will comprise a primary alginate production unit and a biorefinery for quality control and further product development.

Potential Job Creation
The facility is expected to create significant employment opportunities in marine communities across the Western and Northern Cape provinces, where economic activity has been constrained by the decline of traditional industries.

Capital Expenditure
Over R50-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Operations are expected to start in November 2025.

Latest Developments
A formal agreement has been signed to proceed with the fully funded project.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
SKEG (front-end engineering design and engineering development); and Abacus Group (project management).
