A new tool for dry machining of aluminum extruded profiles is said to achieve improved surface qualities without the use of cooling lubricants. This helps to achieve more resource-efficient and sustainable machining, while improving safety by eliminating toxic vapours.

The BoneCrusher from Hufschmied is said to provide high-quality, burr-free milling results without any lubrication.

The lack of lubricant means there are no wet, clumped chips that stick in cavities and adhere to the workpieces, leaving only dry chips that are easier to clean.

Wet chips that remain stuck in hollow spaces have the potential to damage aluminum oxide coated surfaces. The dry processing tool means that entire cleaning process steps can be eliminated. In addition, machine operators are no longer exposed to coolant contaminants and dry chips are easier to recycle.

“We are pleased that with the BoneCrusher tool we have succeeded in developing an efficient, long-lasting tool for process optimization for machining aluminum extruded profiles. This tool is also resource-saving and sustainable because, for the first time in this application, it allows cooling and lubrication to be omitted,” explains Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme MD Christel Hufschmied.

The new process- and material-optimised, specially coated tools are available in 16 standard sizes and Hufschmied also supplies customised tools on request.
