Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) says in a statement that is has learnt of the death of another worker in a fall-of-ground (FoG) accident at gold miner Harmony Gold Mining Company’s Tshepong North shaft, in the Free State.

According to the reports received, at about 19:42 on May 24, there was a FoG at 69 E 95 Panel 12, and the injured was sent to hospital for further medical attention. He passed on May 30 at around 02:31, AMCU reports.

The union is still awaiting the preliminary report from Harmony.

Mining Weekly has reached out to Harmony for confirmation and comment.

“FoG incidents remain unacceptably high in the South African mining industry. Ten FoG fatalities have been recorded this year. Transport- and mining-related incidents account for a further eight fatalities. The total number of mine fatalities to date is 23,” the union points out.

This is the tenth fatality at Harmony this year, AMCU points out.

As previously reported by Mining Weekly, Harmony reported that an employee died in an incident at its surface operations at the Saaiplaas reclamation camp, in Virginia, in the Free State, on April 27.

This followed only two days after the death of an employee in a locomotive-related accident at Harmony's Moab Khotsong mine, on April 25.

A FoG incident at the company’s Mponeng mine, in February, claimed the lives of two employees, while another five lost their lives in two separate incidents at the Doornkop and Joel mines in the same month.

AMCU president Joseph Mathunjwa expressed his condolences to the families and colleagues of the mineworkers, reiterating the union’s stance that FoG incidents were recurring incidents that could be prevented.
