Arizona to deploy Koch’s commercial-scale DLE at Prairie project
ASX-listed Arizona Lithium has signed an agreement with Koch Technology Solutions (KTS) to deploy its Li-Pro commercial-scale direct lithium extraction (DLE) unit for Phase 1 production at the Prairie project, in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The company has also entered into a memorandum of understanding for a commercial licence to expand the use of KTS’s technology beyond Phase 1.
“It has always been AZL’s intention to be a first mover and leader in oil field lithium brines and with the commitment of AZL to the Koch technology your company will be one of the first global companies to produce at commercial scale from an oil field brine project,” says Arizona MD Paul Lloyd.
Phase 1 of the Prairie project will see lithium production start at Pad #1 using the Li-Pro unit supplied by KTS. The unit is designed to produce 150 t/y of lithium carbonate equivalent. The lithium output will help de-risk end-market opportunities, with battery-grade samples currently undergoing testing by potential buyers in Asia and North America.
Brine processing during Phase 1 will take place at a rate of 1 000 m2/d. Arizona says operating the Li-Pro unit continuously at this scale will enable the company to assess the temperature, pressure, and chemical composition of the brine while proving the commercial viability of the extraction technology.
As a full commercial-scale unit, the Li-Pro system will enable Arizona to expand production at Pad #1 through a modular deployment of additional units. The Li-Pro unit is expected to be delivered and commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Arizona aims to scale up production at Pad #1 by adding more units before rolling out further commercial facilities at Pad #2, Pad #3, and other sites under consideration.
KTS is part of Koch Engineered Solutions, a subsidiary of US-based Koch.
