Free State, in South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Norwegian renewable-energy systems company Scatec will own 50.01% of the equity in the project, with Stanlib’s Greenstreet and Redstreet Funds owning 44.99% and a community trust holding 5%.

Project Description
Scatec was chosen as the preferred bidder for the development of a 123 MW/492 MWh BESS in Bid Window 3 of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, or BESIPPPP, in May 2025.

Capital expenditure is estimated at R2.2-billion. The project will be financed by 90% nonrecourse project debt and the balance by equity from the owners.

Commercial close is expected to be concluded by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
