“Indigenous knowledge systems amongst the zamazama in Johannesburg”

Dr Janet Munukamweis Research Fellow at the African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS), University of Witwatersrand.  For the last five years, Janet has conducted extensive research in the mining sector with a special focus on ‘illegal’ miners, colloquially known as zamazamas in South Africa.  The aim of the project is to contribute towards scholarly debates on historical and contemporary mining, and also to inform legislative and policy interventions.  Aside mining, Janet is also interested in labour, migration, gender and development. 

“The impact of the South African environmental regulatory framework on artisanal mining”

Mihlali Sitefane Is a natural resource attorney specializing in mining and environmental law at LNP Attorneys Inc.  She has acted for local and international clients throughout Africa on a number of high-profile mining transactions.  She as assisted in establishing in-country and cross-border operations and advised on all aspects of regulatory compliance, mining titles, surface use issues, mining-related disputes, and administrative and constitutional law issues.
