Name of the Project
Atlantis solar PV/BESS plant.

Location
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
City of Cape Town.

Project Description
Cape Town is the first metro in South Africa to start construction on its own solar PV plant as the city advances to diversify energy resources and become “future-fit”.

The project entails the construction of a 7 MW to 10 MW solar PV facility. The intention is to potentially have several similar plants rolled out across the metro in the years to come.

The Atlantis site will include the city’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). By co-locating the battery system at the Atlantis PV plant, it allows for the solar PV and BESS to operate in synergy as a hybrid plant.

The BESS project will serve as a pilot project to eventually incorporate energy storage within the city’s network. The project will target a minimum rated power output of 5 MW, and have a usable energy storage capacity of 8 MWh.

The plant could potentially scale up to 10 MW.

Potential Job Creation
No details provided.

Capital Expenditure
R200-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The first power is expected to be delivered towards the end of 2025.

Latest Developments
The City of Cape Town has reported that, to date, about 2 400 solar panels out of the planned 12 850 panels have been installed at the plant.

The plant is on track to be connected to the local grid by the end of the year.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Lesedi Technoserve Consortium (engineering, procurement and construction of solar PV plant).
