BACSA strengthens leadership with appointment of Du Plessis, Kingston
Business-led nonprofit platform Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) has appointed advocate Anton du Plessis as strategy and performance executive head and CEO-designate, and Martin Kingston as a nonexecutive director on the board.
The appointments will significantly strengthen the organisation’s strategic and executive capacity as it intensifies its efforts to combat crime and corruption in South Africa, the organisation says.
BACSA’s new strategy, called BACSA 3.0, is focused on impact. It aims to strengthen capability and accountability across the criminal-justice system by mobilising private-sector data, expertise, funding and technology in support of lawful, outcomes-driven public-private collaboration.
The strategy targets priority organised-crime and illicit-economy threats that undermine infrastructure, economic resilience and investor confidence.
Du Plessis stepped down from his role as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions at the National Prosecuting Authority in December 2025.
His experience also includes senior international roles at the UN Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate and as Institute for Security Studies executive director.
Du Plessis is widely published and has served on numerous international, regional and national expert groups on criminal justice reform. He will be responsible for leading BACSA’s strategic planning and performance management, BACSA notes.
Kingston is a respected South African business leader, who brings deep experience in business–government collaboration, and the design and execution of complex, multistakeholder initiatives.
He serves as financial services firm Rothschild & Co South Africa executive chairperson and as a partner of the Rothchild Group. Kingston also serves as the Business for South Africa (B4SA) steering committee chairperson and as the Resource Mobilisation Fund chairperson.
In these roles, he has played a central part in Presidency-led public-private partnership platforms, including during the Covid-19 response and, more recently, in priority national interventions focused on energy security, transport and logistics, and crime and corruption.
Kingston also co-chairs the B4SA Joint Strategic Oversight Committee, which oversees the partnership with government.
His appointment significantly strengthens BACSA’s board-level capacity, credibility and strategic reach, and enhances the organisation’s capacity to support government and business in restoring the rule of law, strengthening institutional capability, and addressing systemic crime and corruption, the organisation says.
“These appointments materially enhance BACSA’s ability to support the restoration of the rule of law and to work collaboratively with government, business, and civil society in delivering practical, outcomes-focused interventions Our work is guided by cooperation, accountability and respect for institutional roles,” says BACSA chairperson Neal Froneman.
