German renewable-energy company ENERTRAG has appointment Enos Banda as the new CEO of South African operations.

A lawyer by training, Banda is a well-known personality in the South African energy sector having previously headed Eskom Enterprises, chaired South Africa’s energy regulator in the 1990s, and having been a senior executive or board member of both listed and unlisted companies.

More recently, he founded and led BG Energy and was CEO of BG Energy’s Green Transmission Company, which develops, finances, builds and operates grid infrastructure.

ENERTRAG management board member Dr Tobias Bischof-Niemz said the appointment marked a bold new chapter for the group’s South African operations, where a substantial renewables pipeline had been developed.

“Under Enos’ leadership, we are reinforcing our commitment to driving innovation and delivering sustainable energy solutions to South Africa, especially in the coal region of Mpumalanga.

“His expertise and leadership will play a critical role in advancing our mission to contribute to South Africa’s sustainable energy future.”

Banda said he was excited to step into the role during a period of rapid transformation in the South African electricity sector and notable grid challenges.

“Our goal is to drive meaningful change by leveraging ENERTRAG’s global innovations and pioneering work that I’ve been involved in on the South African grid development and investment.

“I believe now, more than ever, global innovation, local expertise and collaboration are key to achieving a successful energy transition,” Banda said in a statement.
