Project Description
BMW Group South Africa announced an investment in 2023 to equip its Rosslyn plant to build the fourth-generation BMW X3 PHEV (G45). 

The plant will use a production process that prioritises the conservation of resources and circularity. Production will start with the PHEV model, exclusively manufactured in Rosslyn for the world.

The new fourth-generation BMW X3 will also be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, in South Carolina, in the US.

Potential Job Creation
About 20 000 people are directly and indirectly employed at BMW Group South Africa’s facilities and within its supply chain. 

Capital Expenditure
BMW Group is investing R4.2-billion in the site over five years.

Planned Start/End Date
BMW Group Plant Rosslyn ended production of the third-generation BMW X3 on August 28, 2024. The plant will start manufacturing the fourth-generation BMW X3 in October 2024.

Latest Developments
Mahle Behr South Africa (MBZA) has launched its new production line at its plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The new line will manufacture the engine cooling modules (ECM) for the latest G45 generation of BMW’s X3 car.

The G45 ECM production line is ramping up to full capacity, in parallel with the start of local production of the X3 (G45). The ECMs assembled in Durban will be shipped to BMW’s Rosslyn assembly plant, in Pretoria, for installation in the new cars.
