Name of the Project
Canary Islands power infrastructure strengthening project.

Location
Canary Islands.

Client
Red Eléctrica de España (REE).

Project Description
The Canary Islands transmission grid comprises about 1 350 km of power lines and 50 substations.

The project involves the supply of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and shunt reactors to support the upgrade of the electricity transmission infrastructure on the islands.

Part of the upgrade includes the design, supply and commissioning of 145 kV and 72 kV GIS to be installed in three indoor substations located on the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The GIS will allow for an interconnection between the electricity systems of the islands.

The project also includes the design, supply and commissioning of three shunt reactors, 6 MVAr 72kV and one 9 MVAr 132kV to be installed in the same indoor substations located on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Shunt reactors are low-loss versions and will be used for the compensating of capacitive power of submarine cables between the Canary Islands.

In addition, REE plans to upgrade the mainland electricity transmission infrastructure with seven single-phase 200 MVA 420 kV autotransformers.
