Cape Town set to take over signal management at 32 Sanral-run intersections as it seeks greater efficiency
The City of Cape Town’s (CoCT’s) Urban Mobility Directorate says it is awaiting council approval to sign a three-year agreement with South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) Western Cape that will allow it to maintain and manage traffic signals at 32 intersections on national roads that are located within city limits.
The national roads agency will remain responsible for all of the costs related to the construction, maintenance and operation of the traffic signals at these intersections
The proposed agreement will, however, stipulate the various parties’ obligations, as well as the cost of materials and labour, upgrades and new installations.
Sanral’s signal systems are part of Cape Town’s area traffic control network and monitored from its Transport Management Centre.
The 32 signalised intersections are on the R300 between the N2 and the N1 highways; the N2 highway between the R300 and the R102; and the N1 highway from the R300, towards the east.
CoCT currently maintains and manages roughly 1 560 signalised intersections on the municipal road network.
“The city has four traffic signal maintenance depots across Cape Town that are responsible for the signals that fall within their areas,” says CoCT Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas.
“We also have dedicated staff who are experts in traffic signal efficiencies and are responsible for the sequencing, alignment and timing to ensure traffic flows along major transport networks are optimised.”
Quintas believes Capetonians will “benefit significantly” from the agreement as it will allow “the city to respond to faults at Sanral signals, and to do component upgrades that will improve the operational efficiencies of the signals at these intersections”.
