As South Africa’s transport sector embraces the shift towards cleaner, more affordable fuels, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) continues to emerge as a practical and proven solution for high-usage fleets such as taxis, municipal vehicles, and last-mile logistics, especially in the hard to abate transportation sector.

With increasing interest in alternative fuels like LPG and LNG, industry leaders are highlighting CNG’s unique role as the ideal option for short to medium-haul transport applications. Unlike long-haul fuels requiring advanced logistics or first-generation fuels with limited scalability, CNG delivers a balanced combination of cost savings, operational efficiency, and reduced emissions — all with technology and infrastructure that’s available right now.

“Compressed Natural Gas is not only cleaner and more stable in price than conventional fuels — it’s immediately deployable,” says Josua le Roux, CEO of CNG Holdings. “While we welcome a growing mix of energy solutions, CNG has already proven itself as the smart, scalable alternative for local fleets, and we’re proud to be leading its rollout across South Africa.”

CNG reduces greenhouse gas emissions and produces virtually no particulate matter or sulphur oxides. Its cleaner combustion helps to extend engine life and reduce maintenance costs — a major benefit for both the public and private fleet industries relying on daily vehicle availability.

As the country balances environmental goals with economic pressures, CNG’s affordability is a key driver. It provides a dependable alternative to fluctuating diesel and petrol prices, and its refuelling model suits vehicles that return to depots or designated fuelling sites — making it ideal for the country’s minibus taxi industry and urban logistics.

Through its NGV Gas division, CNG Holdings has made significant investments in filling stations dedicated to fuelling natural gas vehicles. These stations support both private and commercial fleet operators with a clean, cost-effective energy solution for daily operations.

CNG Holdings also offers broader natural gas solutions for industrial users through its Virtual Gas Network, complementing its vehicle fuelling services and reinforcing its commitment to cleaner energy across sectors.

“South Africa doesn’t need to wait for solutions. CNG is ready, it’s reliable, and it’s aligned with the operational needs of our hard to abate transport and industrial sectors,” says le Roux. “Our mission is to make natural gas more accessible to businesses that want to grow sustainably — without compromising performance or cost.”

CNG is not positioned in opposition to other fuels like LPG or LNG. Instead, it plays a complementary role in South Africa’s multi-energy future — offering an almost immediate dependable middle ground for fleets and businesses that need daily efficiency, long-term savings, and a lower environmental impact.
