The mining industry is under ever-growing pressure from end customers and regulators to cut carbon emissions, with net-zero expectations increasingly reshaping business strategies and investment decisions.

Creamer Media's 'Decarbonisation in Mining 2024/25: Mining in a low carbon future' report explores how mining companies are working to reduce their environmental footprint through renewable energy, electrification, and energy-efficient technologies. While progress is apparent – in Africa, especially in South Africa – challenges remain, not least the industry tackling indirect (Scope 3) emissions, securing funding, and managing the shift away from coal in a way that protects jobs and communities.

Many companies are ramping up solar and wind power projects to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. Green hydrogen, alternative fuels, and carbon capture are also emerging as key solutions, particularly in energy-intensive sectors like iron-ore and steel production. However, despite these advances, the road to decarbonisation has its challenges. Issues like complex regulations, financial constraints, and the feasibility of implementing large-scale change continue to pose hurdles.

Governments and shareholders are pushing the mining industry to move faster to meet global climate targets while staying competitive in a world increasingly focused on sustainability. This report highlights key trends shaping mining’s low-carbon future, from shifting policies and investor demands to technological breakthroughs.
