Business energy solutions company Decentral Energy and offgrid energy solutions company Blockpower have commissioned a fully offgrid 828 kW solar PV installation with a 2 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Illovo Country Estate, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Decentral Energy financed the energy solution, while Blockpower designed and built it. The solution integrates seamlessly into property developer Alley Roads’ housing model for the 240-unit affordable housing development.

The solution has enabled the estate to go fully offgrid and provides clean, uninterrupted power to residents, eliminating dependence on the increasingly unstable and carbon-intensive local grid, Decentral Energy says.

A mix of rooftop, carport and ground-mounted solar panels provides the estate’s full daily energy requirements, while Blockpower’s load management and metering technology ensures stored solar energy is efficiently used to provide 24/7 electricity, including on cloudy days or at night.

Residents have consistent power for lighting, appliances and daily needs without exposure to loadshedding or other outages and significantly reduce their carbon emissions.

The estate presents a replicable model for energy-secure affordable housing nationwide and sustainable residential development in South Africa.

“By financing this offgrid system at Illovo Country Estate, we’re giving 240 households clean, dependable power, liberating them from an unreliable grid and securing their energy future,” says Decentral Energy executive director Christian Bode.

“The system delivers uninterrupted power to residents, proving that sustainable energy can replace a faltering grid entirely,” adds Blockpower CEO Kyle Bohnsack.

“Illovo Country Estate is about building better lives. With Decentral Energy and Blockpower, our residents now have stable, clean electricity, free from outages and volatile utility costs, making their homes truly independent,” Alley Roads CEO Ivan Pretorius comments.
