Renewable energy and battery company Decentral Energy has entered into a partnership with KwaZulu-Natal Midlands-based retirement accommodation and care company Mowana Communities, which will result in the financing, design, installation and operation of advanced hybrid energy systems for three of Mowana's residences.

The integrated systems will include a total of 435 kW of solar PV panels, 720 kWh of battery storage and 360 kVA of diesel generators, and will be seamlessly connected to the municipal grid.

The solutions are tailored to meet Mowana's energy needs by ensuring cost savings, budgeting predictability, energy reliability and sustainability for its essential services, including its frail care units, central kitchens and security systems, the companies said in a statement.

Reliable energy is critical for Mowana to maintain its provision of safe and comfortable living arrangements for older adults, with essential services ranging from independent living to fully supported care.

The three residences are Woodgrove Village and Sunnyside Village in Pietermaritzburg, and Greendale Care Centre in Howick.

The hybrid energy systems will lower Mowana's medium- to long-term electricity costs and reduce its reliance on diesel generators, thereby leading to significant cost savings and a smaller environmental impact.

By integrating solar PV, batteries and diesel generators with the municipal grid, the solution offers excellent energy reliability and efficiency.

This partnership aims to safeguard Mowana's operations against loadshedding, prolonged outages and rising energy costs, the company said.

“This project underscores our commitment to ensuring our residents' comfort and safety. Decentral Energy's innovative approach aligns perfectly with our vision of sustainability and resilience,” said Mowana CEO Trevor Clowes.

“Our expertise in hybrid energy solutions will ensure Mowana's facilities operate seamlessly, even during power outages, while also contributing to environmental sustainability,” said Decentral Energy executive director Christian Bode.

“As the energy landscape evolves, projects like this highlight the potential for innovative solutions to address pressing challenges such as energy security and affordability. We are excited to partner with Mowana Communities on this transformative project,” he added.
