As South Africa navigates its energy challenges, the path to a sustainable future lies in the Just Energy Transition (JET). The key to this transition is not just technological advancements but also equipping South Africa’s workforce and SMMEs with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a green economy. DLO Energy Skills Initiative (Pty) Ltd, a black female-owned social enterprise, is at the forefront of this effort, providing critical training and support to empower South Africans to lead the country’s energy transformation.

Reskilling for a Green Economy

DLO Energy Skills Initiative is committed to fostering a skilled workforce that can drive the Just Energy Transition forward. In partnership with Action for the Climate Emergency (ACE), a U.S.-based nonprofit, DLO is launching a series of educational programs designed to prepare South Africans for the opportunities emerging in the renewable energy sector. The first of these initiatives is an online workshop titled “Introduction to the Just Energy Transition & Opportunities for New Entrants in the Renewable Energy Sector,” scheduled for October 1-3, 2024.

This workshop aims to equip participants with the technical, financial, and regulatory knowledge required to navigate and succeed in the renewable energy landscape. By focusing on the development of local talent, DLO is ensuring that South Africans are not just participants but leaders in the country’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.

Empowering SMMEs and Entrepreneurs

In addition to reskilling the workforce, DLO is dedicated to empowering SMMEs and entrepreneurs to take full advantage of the green economy. The upcoming workshop will provide in-depth insights into the renewable energy sector, covering key topics such as:

  • Strategies for leveraging government and private sector initiatives
  • Understanding the technical and financial aspects of renewable energy projects
  • Navigating the legal and commercial frameworks of energy initiatives
  • Unlocking opportunities in the solar industry value chain
  • Securing funding for renewable energy startups

The workshop will feature leading industry experts, including Linda Mabhena-Olagunju, Rapelang Ramatlhodi, and Taffy Ganye, who have played pivotal roles in South Africa’s renewable energy projects. These experts will guide participants through the critical aspects of the Just Energy Transition, ensuring they are well-prepared to contribute to and benefit from the country’s green economy.

Building a Sustainable Future

As South Africa progresses towards a stable and resilient energy future, DLO Energy Skills Initiative is playing a crucial role in building the capacity needed to sustain this momentum. By reskilling the workforce and supporting SMMEs, DLO is not only addressing the immediate challenges of the Just Energy Transition but also laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and sustainability.

Comment from ACE

“The climate emergency and the energy challenges facing South Africa demand innovative solutions and a skilled workforce to implement them,” said Leah Qusba, Executive Director of Action for the Climate Emergency (ACE). “Through our collaboration with DLO, we are equipping South Africans with the tools and knowledge they need to lead the Just Energy Transition. This workshop is a vital step in ensuring that South Africa’s future energy landscape is both sustainable and inclusive.”
