Creamer Media’s ‘Projects in Progress 2024’ report provides a comprehensive overview of developments in South Africa’s economy, as reflected through some of the major infrastructure projects under way across key sectors such as electricity, transportation, water and mining.

Notable energy projects include the Department of Electricity and Energy’s Gas Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, which aims to deliver 3 000 MW of new capacity, and the latest bidding round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, designed to procure 2 583 MW from wind and solar projects.

Transportation infrastructure initiatives, such as the N2 Wild Coast Toll Road, featuring Africa’s highest bridge, and vital water projects such as the Lesotho Highlands Water Project – Phase II, are key to strengthening the region’s economic infrastructure.

In the mining sector, projects are under way to boost coal production to 20-million tons a year by 2025, while investments in gold and diamond mining will expand operations and extend the life of major mines. The report also references significant mining developments across Africa, underscoring the continent’s growing role in the global mining industry.

Together, these projects represent substantial capital investments that are driving growth and development across South Africa and the broader Africa region, providing valuable insights into the infrastructure shaping South Africa’s economic future.

This report is a summary of information published in Engineering News & Mining Weekly, as well as of information available in the public domain over the past 12 months. The report does not purport to provide analysis of market trends.

The information in this report is correct as of September 2024.
