Last month, heavy equipment manufacturer John Deere announced that it has redesigned its 410 P-Tier articulated dump truck (ADT) with upgrades to its design and productivity performance, following requests by its earthmoving clients through a discussion with customer groups.

The 410 P-Tier ADT now incorporates a redesigned and wider dump body that enhances material retention, lowers the loading height, and shifts the centre of gravity downward. These improvements significantly boost cycle times in quarry and aggregate mining applications.

In addition, the top-angled bin rail reduces material spillage during travel, thereby enhancing the efficiency and productivity of an operation.

According to John Deere, the 410 P-Tier ADT is engineered for reliability, with robust machine sensors and streamlined routing of electrical harnesses and hydraulic hoses. The reduction in hose length and the number of connections – 10% fewer than John Deere’s E-Series models – reduces system complexity, enhancing overall reliability.

Advanced Drive Modes

The 410 P-Tier ADT features three drive modes customised to improve machine response for various applications.

The ‘normal’ drive mode is suited for general operations, providing balanced performance, while the vehicle’s ‘eco’ drive mode conserves fuel by smoothing throttle input, reducing the engine’s maximum revolutions a minute, and optimising transmission response under favourable conditions.

John Deere claims that the economy mode can deliver up to 7% fuel savings over E-Series models and up to 12% compared with operating in normal mode.

The ADT also features a ‘traction’ drive mode, which increases the vehicle’s control over soft and slippery terrain by enhancing the vehicle’s automatic differential locking system and powertrain for challenging terrain.

Further advancements enable the ADT’s operator to work comfortably with enhanced features, such as the vehicle’s cab being made more comfortable by including an easy-to-read monitor and rear-camera display, and the incorporation of an optional automatic temperature control system.

The cab also includes either a standard high-back air-suspension seat with multiple adjustments for all-day support, or a premium heated and ventilated seat with heavy-duty air-suspension and adjustable seat pan.

The 410 P-Tier ADT includes LED drive lights, as well as work lights that are three times brighter than halogen technology.

The ADT also offers pushbutton-operated stairway lights, accessible from inside the cab or at ground level.

In terms of service accessibility, the revamped 410 P-Tier ADT enables all daily checks and periodic services to be undertaken from ground level, including fuel and diesel exhaust fluid refills.

There is also an option to select a factory-installed automatic lubrication device, integrated with machine diagnostics, which simplifies daily maintenance.

Enhanced safety features include a safety bar which locks the dump body to the mainframe when fully upright and disengages the hydraulics for secure servicing.

The 410 P-Tier ADT also has a standard rear-view camera with display options for enhanced operator visibility, and an automatic horn which sounds when the ADT starts, moves forward or backward, or changes direction, complying with Mine Safety and Health Administration regulations.

A load management system also helps operators ensure they are sufficiently level when unloading, which is engaged through a monitor. If the limit is exceeded, the dump body will not raise, and a message will instruct the operator to reposition the ADT.
