Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), responsible for the operation of South Africa’s eight commercial ports, has announced that it has started a six-month rehabilitation project for Bayhead road, in the Port of Durban. This road is a crucially important route within the harbour complex, providing access to warehouses and industrial facilities as well as port terminals.

“The Bayhead road is one of South Africa’s busiest roads transporting cargo to and from the major container terminals and the Island View port precinct,” highlighted Port of Durban acting port manager Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi.  “The Ports Authority acknowledges the disruption construction will cause and a traffic management plan has been prepared to minimise traffic congestion to ensure smooth operations during construction.”

It is estimated that 13 000 vehicles – almost 50% of them heavy trucks – travel along the road every day. The result is very significant wear and tear to the road, which has caused congestion and delays, and indeed concerns about safety.

The rehabilitation project will see the existing asphalt milled and new asphalt laid in both carriageways. Stormwater structures will be repaired. And new road signs installed and new road markings laid down. The result will be the restoration of the road’s structural integrity and the facilitation of the seamless movement of cargo.

While the rehabilitation work is under way, a detailed traffic management plan will be implemented. There will be phased lane closures and use of alternative routes. Clear signage will be provided and traffic officials will be present, to guide motorists through and around the rehabilitation works. The aim is to maintain a safe and continuous flow of traffic. Further, TNPA is in continuous contact with the key stakeholders in the port, including its users and industry associations, as well as with law enforcement agencies.

“The Bayhead road rehabilitation project is a critical investment in the Port of Durban’s infrastructure,” stated the Ports Authority. “TNPA is committed to minimising disruptions during the construction period and appreciates the cooperation and understanding of road and port users.”
