A fatal accident has occurred at Fortuna Mining's Séguéla gold mine in Côte d’Ivoire, the NYSE- and TSX-listed company reported on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday at the contractor’s light vehicle maintenance workshop when an employee of Mapa Protection Incendie (MPI), a service provider to the mine’s contractor Mota Engil, was refilling fire extinguishers. An explosion occurred during the procedure, resulting in fatal injuries to the MPI employee.

The site’s emergency and rescue team provided assistance, and the worker was transported to the Séguéla City Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. No other personnel were harmed in the incident.

Fortuna has notified the relevant government and local authorities and has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.

“It is with a heavy heart that I address this tragic accident. Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased,” Fortuna president and CEO Jorge A. Ganoza said in a statement. "The safety and well-being of the entire workforce is our top priority, and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to understand how this happened and to prevent such incidents in the future."

Fortuna is a Canadian precious metals mining company with operations in Latin America and West Africa. The Séguéla mine, which poured its first gold in May 2023, is one of the company’s key assets in the region.
