The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Working Group 1 report, which assesses the physical science basis for climate change, points to a near-linear relationship between cumulative human-generated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and the global warming they cause. The report also highlights that “strong and sustained reductions in emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases would limit climate change”. In other words, if COP26 can create the political will needed for collective action, there is still a way to flatten the climate curve.
