Name of the Project
Gorgas battery facility.

Location
Walker County, Alabama, in the US.

Electricity provider Alabama Power.

Project Description
The project envisages the development of Alabama’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system on the former Gorgas power plant site.

The facility will store up to 150 MW of electricity generated by other Alabama Power resources, which is equivalent to the capacity needed to power about 9 000 homes.

The 2.80 ha facility will be designed as a standalone system that will connect to and charge directly from the electric grid – the interconnected system of high-voltage wires and equipment that transports large amounts of electricity across the state.

The lithium iron phosphate batteries will have a two-hour duration, with the ability to recharge in about two hours.
