GridCars is powering South Africa’s electromobility journey
This year has been a defining year for GridCars, marking significant progress in South Africa’s electromobility journey. From expanding the national charging network to signing strategic agreements, GridCars has shown that it is not just part of the electric vehicle (EV) conversation – it is leading it.
As part of its customer-first approach, GridCars offers 24/7 access to the Charge Pocket app, giving drivers real-time responses to queries and ensuring a smooth charging experience wherever they are. This is more than convenience – it is about building trust and reliability for every EV owner.
Why GridCars Leads the Pack?
GridCars made history in 2009 as the first EV charging network to install an EV charger at the CSIR building, laying the foundation for South Africa’s electric mobility future. Today, South Africa boasts about 650 public EV chargers, and GridCars manages most of them, making it the largest charging network operator in the country.
The Charge Pocket app connects drivers to about 445 sites on the map representing 650 chargers and more than 1 200 connectors, ensuring seamless access and real-time station information. From highways to urban centers, GridCars ensures EV drivers can travel confidently across South Africa.
The company’s intelligent charging systems are designed for South Africa’s energy environment, enabling integration with solar, batteries and smart load management where required.
Beyond private EV drivers, GridCars supports fleets, retailers and commercial operators transitioning to electromobility at scale.
The company has also prioritised local content and skills development, ensuring South Africa’s EV transition supports jobs, industrial capability and long-term economic growth.
Highlights from 2025
Multiple high-capacity charging stations were added across key highways and urban hubs, making long-distance EV travel practical.
Collaborations with original-equipment manufacturers, retailers and energy providers have strengthened the ecosystem, ensuring EV drivers have access to integrated solutions.
A major memorandum of understanding was also concluded, with leading industry players to accelerate infrastructure development and support South Africa’s green mobility goals, while the continued rollout of intelligent charging systems optimised energy use and reduced costs for drivers.
Looking Ahead to 2026
GridCars is preparing for a year of bold moves. Inspired by Huawei’s message of “Charging EVs faster than making a cup of coffee”, GridCars will introduce ultra-fast charging technology designed to limit downtime and make EV travel effortless.
What’s Coming?
Ultra-fast liquid-cooled chargers will bring global-standard charging speeds to South Africa, while an enhanced digital experience will be enabled through smarter platforms for station availability, predictive maintenance and easy payments.
Sustainability will be scaled, with partnerships deepened to ensure every charge supports a cleaner, greener future.
GridCars is not just building infrastructure, it is shaping the future of mobility. As South Africa’s EV market accelerates, GridCars is positioning itself at the forefront of the country’s next chapter in electromobility.
The company continues to play an active role in shaping South Africa’s EV ecosystem through partnerships, standards development and industry collaboration.
