Growing Chinese vehicle sales translating into used-market volumes, with Chery leading the pack
The popularity of imported new Chinese vehicles in the South African market is starting to translate into tangible volumes in the used-car market for many of these brands, as indicated by data released by AutoTrader.
The vehicle-sales platform says the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro was the best-selling used Chinese car in South Africa last year, at 3 144 units.
The average unit sold was two years old, achieved a price of R284 779, and had 21 970 km on the clock.
The Tiggo 4 Pro was followed by the Haval Jolion, which competes in the same class.
Here sales were slightly lower, at 2 736 units. The average car sold was three years old, with a price of R319 259 and mileage at 35 826 km.
In third position is the GWM P-Series at an average sales price of R398 589, and with an average mileage of 55 733 km and a registration age of three years.
The fourth spot is filled by the Haval H6 midsize sports-utility vehicle.
With 1 501 used units sold, the average sale was a two-year-old vehicle, priced at R411 878, and with 34 522 km on the clock.
Rounding out the top five is the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro selling 1 098 units, with the average sale a two-year-old vehicle priced at R392 860 and with an average mileage of 24 085 km.
“Chinese [vehicle manufacturers] have learned how to narrow the gap between cost and perceived value, delivering around 80% of the consumer experience at roughly 60% of the price of traditional players,” says AutoTrader CEO George Mienie.
“By focusing on tangible performance and visible benefits rather than legacy branding, they have capitalised on a shift in consumer behaviour.
“As buyers become more informed and discerning, brand loyalty is weakening, replaced by an expectation for high-quality products that justify every rand spent.”
