TSX-V-listed Highland Copper Company has received approval for its updated air permit application for the Copperwood project in Michigan, US, the company announced on Tuesday.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) formally approved the updated permit to install on February 27, replacing the previous permit granted in 2018. The new permit allows the project to supplement its main electrical supply with on-site generators as needed, enhancing operational reliability.

As part of the regulatory process, EGLE conducted a public comment period, which concluded on December 10, and held a virtual public hearing on October 30. The Air Quality Division undertook a review of public feedback before granting approval.

“We are pleased to receive this approval from EGLE, which reflects the thorough and fair regulatory review process in Michigan,” said Highland CEO Barry O’Shea. “The issuance of this permit underscores that Copperwood has been designed to meet rigorous environmental standards and operate responsibly within the community. We appreciate the continued support from state authorities and the local community, whose engagement has been instrumental throughout this process.”

Highland stated that it remains committed to advancing the Copperwood project in compliance with government regulations, environmental best practices, and community expectations. The company will continue working with stakeholders as it moves toward production.

Highland Copper focuses on developing copper projects in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It owns the Copperwood deposit through long-term mineral leases and holds a 34% stake in the White Pine North project through a joint venture with Kinterra Copper USA. The company also controls surface rights for infrastructure development at Copperwood.
