How energy drive reduces energy consumption by up to 80% using variable speed drives

In real world industrial applications, it is common that fan and pump systems perform at efficiencies far below optimal. This is because the motors on variable torque applications run at design RPM, while the work being done by the fan or pump is controlled using dampers or valves to meet the process requirements. That’s where a variable speed drive (VSD) can help.
Driving a motor with a variable speed drive (VSD) allows the system to match the work done to the work required by the system by changing the speed of the motor. By changing the speed of the motor and not making use of partially open dampers or valves, losses associated with said dampers and valves can be eliminated. In turn, this not only helps save energy, but also reduces associated energy costs. For example, lowering the running speed of a fan or pump by just 10% with the help of a VSD could reduce power consumption by up to 25%. On average, Energy Drive reduces their clients’ energy consumption by 61% on installed systems, while maintaining process requirements.
Despite the benefits installing a variable speed drive offers, general resource constraints prevent many sites from using VSDs in the first place. That’s why Energy Drive has developed an innovative, fully engineered, turnkey solution where the system’s project costs, ongoing maintenance and real-time monitoring are all included in a zero-capex service contract. A solution we were proud to be recognised for with the SAEEC Energy Company of the Year (2019) award. Put simply, Energy Drive invests in the equipment, installs it, and ensures that it runs efficiently for as long as the equipment is on your site.
Additionally, every system is installed with a fully motorised bypass, meaning that if a VSD were to fail, the electrical supply system is reconfigured through motorised RMU’s or contactors and quickly allows the motor to revert to the original electrical supply and control system. Once the fault has been rectified, the system can be changed back to VSD control. In most cases, the bypass system can happen quickly enough to avoid production down time.
Each Energy Drive system is monitored for electrical consumption, and system health and performance. The energy consumption data is sent to an independent third party, meaning the integrity of the data is of the highest standard. This information is available to clients via an access-controlled web page, while the Energy Drive control centre can analyse the data and generate any alerts, ensuring Energy Drive is always aware of the health of every system in the field.
