Name of the Project
Hydrogen-based ironmaking plant.

Location
A site in Linz, Austria, operated by steel and technology group voestalpine.

Project Owner/s
Engineering and plant construction company Primetals Technologies, together with its strategic partner Mitsubishi Corporation, mining company Rio Tinto and voestalpine.

Project Description
The project proposes the implementation and operation of an industrial-scale prototype plant featuring a new process for potential net-zero CO2 emissions ironmaking.

The process, with a projected capacity of 3 t/h of hot metal, is based on Primetals Technologies’ HYFOR and smelter solutions. HYFOR is the world’s first direct reduction technology for iron-ore fines that do not require any agglomeration steps. The smelter is a furnace powered by renewable energy used for melting and final reduction of direct reduced iron. It produces potential net-zero CO2 emissions hot metal for the steelmaking plant.

Rio Tinto will supply 70% of the iron-ore for the project.
