The role of commercial aviation in providing assistance and support during natural disasters and humanitarian crises has been highlighted at the IATA World Cargo Symposium in Istanbul, Türkiye. (IATA is the International Air Transport Association, the global representative body for the airline industry.)

“When crises strike, aviation is there,” assured IATA director-general Willie Walsh. “Connectivity is essential to get aid and first responders to where they are needed. The response to the recent earthquake in southern Türkiye and Syria was no exception. Airlines helped save lives in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. And airlines continue to help accelerate the recovery with vital cargo shipments.”

A survey of 29 of the airlines – and these were not the only carriers involved – that operate into Türkiye revealed that, following the earthquake, they had delivered more than 3 500 t of aid from more than 90 countries; operated more than 350 relief and repatriation flights to the areas affected by the quake; and transported more than 130 000 responders from around the world. The essential supplies delivered by these airlines had included food, water distribution ramps, blankets, winter jackets, sleeping bags, tents, toilets, power generators, flashlights, hygiene articles and medical supplies.

Coordination for such efforts is provided by a non-profit organisation called Airlink (not to be confused with the South African airline of the same name). This organisation connects airlines with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and enables the matching of resources donated by airlines with the transport needs of NGOs, in times of disaster. Following the Türkiye earthquake, Airlink has so far coordinated the air transport of 1 000 t of aid to the affected area, with 300 t more still to come.

“Airlines have shown exceptional compassion and solidarity, delivering vital supplies and aid to affected communities around the world,” he highlighted. “During crises, we bring hope, relief and aid, striving to rebuild lives together. I am proud to be part of an industry that makes such a difference.”
