ICE-SA Annual Lecture 2025: Lower uMkhomazi Bulk Water Supply
Date: 23 July 2025
Location: Online
The demand for water along the coastal areas south of Durban has increased over the past few decades and is currently at a level greater than the assurance of supply of the existing resources. In 2010, the then Umgeni Water (now uMngeni-uThukela Water) identified a number of options to augment the potable water supply between Amanzimtoti and Hibberdene.
The two favourable options under consideration were 1) the construction of a 150Ml/d Desalination plant near the Lovu River or 2) the construction of an off-channel storage dam on the Lower uMkhomazi River with weirs, pipelines, and pump stations to supply water to a 100Ml/d Water Treatment Plant near Craigieburn.
Ultimately, the Lower uMkhomazi Bulk Water Supply Scheme was chosen as the preferred option and is now being constructed.
This presentation will highlight the planning process followed in motivating for the scheme and will provide an update on the scheme components and construction status.
