Location
Lanseria International Airport, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.
Project Owner/s
Lanseria International Airport (private ownership).
Project Description
The airport is undertaking a large-scale infrastructure development programme aimed at transforming it into a full-service regional aviation hub.
The project includes:
- the construction of new fixed-base operator (FBO) and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, which will offer streamlined services for private and commercial flights;
- the expansion of the fuel farm from one-million litres to six-million litres of Jet A1 and Avgas; and
- the upgrade of Taxiway Alpha from Code C to Code E standards, to accommodate larger aircraft such as Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s.
- These upgrades are intended to enhance regional connectivity, attract new domestic and regional carriers, and support future growth in passenger and cargo volumes.
Work has also started on the five-year hangar refurbishment programme, which will result in the airport’s collaborating with its operators to modernise the hangar facilities to meet operational needs and support growth in aviation activity.
This upgrade will include security access systems, digitised processing systems and higher-quality services to ensure efficient operations across the value chain.
So far, the airport has completed six hangars as part of this plan.
Potential Job Creation
Precise job creation figures have not been disclosed.
Capital Expenditure
The combined capital investment across all components of the upgrade programme is projected to be more than R1-billion.
This includes an estimated R500-million each for the FBO and MRO facilities, R140-million for the expanded fuel depot and R200-million for the taxiway upgrade.
Planned Start/End Date
The upgrade plans were announced in June 2025.
Construction of the FBO and MRO facilities is scheduled to start in phases from 2026, with completion expected by 2031.
The fuel farm expansion is expected to be completed by 2027.
The Taxiway Alpha upgrade is in the survey phase, with completion also aimed for 2027.
