UK-based space research and technology enterprise Space Network, which is focused on stimulating the international development of the commercial space sector, has announced the launch of its latest initiative, Space Network – Africa. This is aimed at impelling economic growth, innovation and education in Africa’s rapidly growing space sector.

“I am absolutely delighted to announce the creation of Space Network – Africa,” enthused Space Network founder and CEO Andy Campbell. “This marks the first of many Space Network hubs planned around the globe as we strive to connect the sector, fostering collaboration and innovation for positive and impactful outcomes worldwide.”

The aim of the new hub is to tap into Africa’s talent, innovation potential and resources, to push economic growth, advance technology, increase global competitiveness, and thereby to benefit the peoples of Africa. More than 60% of the continent’s growing population comprises young people below the age of 25, and they are “tech-savvy”.

“Launching Space Network – Africa will be transformative for the continent,” affirmed Space Network COO Ross Hamilton.

“By uniting talent and resources from across the continent, we aim to cultivate a vibrant, sustainable, and impactful space economy. Africa is ready to become a global leader in space-driven initiatives from agriculture and telecommunications to climate monitoring and equatorial launch.”

Specifically, Space Network – Africa seeks to create marketplaces providing worldwide connections between space companies, innovators, research institutions, universities, African space agencies and investors. These would result in the creation of energetic regional clusters. This vision would be undergirded by strategic global commercial partnerships and a pan-African Space Incubator.

“Our ambition is bold, but our approach is focused,” explained Space Network – Africa hub manager Thabo Kupa. “By establishing Space Network – Africa, fostering regional clusters, collaborating on policy and regulatory frameworks, and attracting global investment, we’re dedicated to accelerating Africa’s commercial space capabilities.”

This will be achieved by means of innovation-centred programmes, designed to connect industry and education. They will provide practical experience through the building of satellites, innovation boot camps, and entrepreneurship competitions. Programmes in the pipeline include a collaboration with CubeSat manufacturers for a multi-country satellite design project, a regional Space Grant Consortium, and the Space for Africa Challenge (which will result in pitches at the first-ever pan-African Space Summit, next year).

There is also an educational aspect to Space Network – Africa, which will be delivered in partnership with professional development and training company Nova Space (not to be confused with space consulting and marketplace intelligence company Novaspace).
