TSX-listed Ivanhoe Mines has published an independently verified updated mineral resource estimate (MRE) for the Makoko District, which is within Ivanhoe’s Western Forelands Exploration project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The MRE now stands at 27.7-million tonnes grading 2.79% copper in the indicated category, as well as 493-million tonnes grading 1.7% copper in the inferred category.

The Western Forelands Exploration project comprises a licence package covering 2 393 km2 and is adjacent to the company’s Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex.

Since the maiden MRE on Makoko was announced in November 2023, Ivanhoe has conducted more than 86 000 m of diamond drilling in the area, which focused on the Makoko, Makoko West and Kitoko discoveries – which are now referred to collectively as the Makoko District.

Ivanhoe discovered 38.9-million tonnes of contained copper in measured and indicated resources, and a further 13.6-million tonnes of inferred resources across the Western Foreland Exploration project, including Kamoa and Kakula.

The Makoto District alone ranks as the highest grade and fifth-largest new copper discovery globally over the past decade, with mineralisation remaining open in multiple directions.

Ivanhoe continues with drilling on the Western Forelands Exploration project in the remainder of the year, with drill results to be included in another updated MRE next year.
