The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) is upgrading infrastructure to support waste management service provider Pikitup to deliver integrated waste solutions while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable city.

The projects are aimed at improving refuse removal and waste management services across Johannesburg.

Specifically, the JDA is building a new waste sorting facility at Linbro landfill, including dedicated reclaimers’ areas, stormwater systems and access roads. Brickwork and electrical installations are under way, the agency says.

Similarly, site establishment is so far complete for the reinforced concrete boundary wall being built at the Marie Louise landfill to enhance security.

At the Ennerdale landfill, similar upgrades are taking place and a boundary wall is being built to improve safety and operational efficiency. Site establishment is complete, the JDA says.

Site establishment is also complete for a new concrete boundary wall that is being erected to secure the Zondi depot and protect Pikitup’s offices and equipment.

Phase 2 of the Goudkoppies landfill rehabilitation project, which includes a temporary leachate pond, a pumping system and restoration of a contaminated pond, has reached 5% completion, the JDA says.

Meanwhile, site establishment will begin soon at the Midrand depot (Rabie Ridge) where the JDA is building boundary walls, stormwater drainage, water and sewer infrastructure, earthworks and a guardhouse.

Pikitup currently operates 12 waste depots, 44 garden refuse sites and four active landfill sites.

These projects fall under the JDA’s Public Infrastructure Delivery Programme, which focuses on maximising investment in essential municipal infrastructure.

The programme ensures that waste management infrastructure is developed and delivered efficiently, in line with Johannesburg’s growth and environmental goals, the agency says.

“The JDA remains committed to delivering infrastructure that supports service delivery and promotes environmental sustainability. These waste management projects are key to ensuring a cleaner, more efficient Johannesburg,” JDA CEO Themba Mathibe says.
