Mineral exploration and development company Kodal Minerals has criticised recent media reports for inaccurately suggesting that exports of spodumene concentrate from its flagship Bougouni lithium project, in southern Mali, have been blocked.

The company said on May 19 that discussions with the government of Mali on finalising the export permit for spodumene concentrate produced at Bougouni are continuing as planned and that the permit is expected to be received soon.

Kodal said it continued to have a positive relationship with the Mali government, having had a presence in the country for more than a decade.

“The government of Mali has been very supportive of the development of Bougouni and this support continues in the ongoing export permit discussions, and it is acknowledged that it is in the interests of the parties to commence exports of spodumene concentrates as soon as possible,” Kodal said.

In this regard, the company added, it has now accumulated more than 27 000 t of spodumene concentrate ready for export.

Kodal also confirmed that operations were continuing as normal, with the ramp up to nameplate production of the processing plant remaining firmly on track.

Kodal CEO Bernard Aylward is currently in Mali, visiting the operations to review the progress of the mining, processing and exploration drilling that is continuing to expand the project.
