Project Description
On August 14, 2024, the JRA terminated the contract with Step Up Engineering for the rehabilitation of Lilian Ngoyi street.

The JRA appointed a new contractor to undertake the remaining work on the project’s first phase, which included:

  • the reconstruction of the 450 m of collapsed road and associated infrastructure sustained during a gas blast in July 2023;
  • construction of a new reinforced concrete tunnel;
  • reinstallation and relocation of stormwater and sewer pipes;
  • installation of lighting, detection and ventilation systems; and
  • the implementation of lateral support for structural stability.

The new contractor will also undertake Phase 2 of the project, inclusive of the road surface upgrades and sidewalks adjustment along the 1.8 km stretch.

Planned Start/End Date
The projected duration for the remainder of Phase 1 is nine months, with the project expected to be completed in June 2025 – an extension of the initial deadline by six months.

The second phase will be completed in June 2026.

Latest Developments
Lilian Ngoyi street has officially reopened to traffic, with Phase 1 of the rehabilitation project completed, the JRA reported on September 11.

Public transport routes will return to their original route configurations.

The newly rebuilt road, between Loveday and End streets, will be a one-way street travelling eastbound.

Intersections along Lilian Ngoyi street at Rissik, Joubert, Eloff, Von Brandis and Wanderers streets will be fully accessible.

However, some continued closures will remain in place, with access to and from Loveday street and Kruis street at the Lilian Ngoyi street intersections to remain closed until further notice, the JRA has noted.

Meanwhile, further details on Phase 2 of the Lilian Ngoyi street rehabilitation project, including traffic impact and route diversions, will be announced in the coming weeks.
