Name of the Project
Lufeng nuclear power plant (NPP).

Location
Guangdong province, China.

Project Owner/s
Chinese State-owned energy China General Nuclear Power.

Project Description
The Lufeng NPP will comprise six nuclear reactors with a capacity of 1 000 MW each.

Units 5 and 6 will use Chinese-designed third-generation Hualong One reactors. The project is expected to generate about 52-billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, saving 15.77-million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 42.69-million tons a year. The project will incorporate modular construction, digital building technologies and automated welding.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction of the Unit 5 and Unit 6 reactors started in 2022 and 2023 respectively, with construction scheduled to be completed in 2028 and 2029 respectively. Construction of Unit 1 started in February 2025.

Latest Developments
A major construction milestone has been reached at Lufeng Unit 2, with the CA20 “super module” – the largest module for the unit – hoisted into place on March 1, 2026, according to CNNC’s construction subsidiary.

The cuboid module measures about 20 m long × 14 m wide × 21 m high, weighs more than 1 000 t, and comprises 32 wall modules and 39 floor modules. It will house plant and equipment for used-fuel storage, transmission, heat-exchanger systems and waste collection, besides others.

World Nuclear News notes that Lufeng Units 1 and 2 are CAP1000 reactors (China’s version of the Westinghouse AP1000), with Unit 1’s first safety-related concrete poured in February 2025 and that of Unit 2 in December 2025.
