MAC welcomes Carney's election as PM
The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has officially congratulated Mark Carney on his election victory and upcoming role as the new Prime Minister of Canada.
With Carney set to lead the country, the mining sector is eager to collaborate with his government to advance responsible mining and the development of critical minerals, positioning Canada as a global leader in sustainable resource extraction.
MAC president and CEO Pierre Gratton underscored the role that the mining industry plays in the country’s economy.
“Mining is one of the most economically significant sectors in Canada, contributing C$117-billion to our GDP and accounting for 21% of the value of Canadian goods exported,” said Gratton.
“Furthermore, the mining industry is a crucial employer, providing one in every 30 jobs across Canada. Our sector’s ability to supply critical minerals that are vital to healthcare, communications, and low-carbon technologies positions us well to take advantage of emerging global opportunities.”
Gratton highlighted the importance of the Liberal platform’s proposed measures to support the growth of Canada's mining sector. These measures included key investments in trade-enabling infrastructure, new tax incentives aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the industry, and dedicated support for Indigenous participation in natural resources projects. Gratton said these initiatives were critical to attracting investment and helping bring more mining projects to fruition, particularly in the context of the increasing global demand for critical minerals.
“The broad range of positive actions outlined by the Liberal platform will undoubtedly help grow Canada’s mining sector,” Gratton continued.
“We are also pleased to see that both the Liberals and Conservatives have committed to accelerating project reviews, and we are eager to work with the new Parliament to ensure these processes happen in a responsible and effective manner.”
As Canada seeks to solidify its role as a global supplier of critical minerals, the mining industry is positioned to leverage the country’s unique advantages. Canada’s mining sector is already one of the least carbon-intensive in the world, owing to the country’s abundant clean energy sources. Canadian mining companies are also leading the way in adopting world-class sustainability standards, such as Towards Sustainable Mining, and are making significant strides in implementing low-emission technologies across their operations.
“Canada's mining industry should be the supplier of choice for the minerals and metals essential to global industries, including defence, semiconductors, and clean technologies,” Gratton emphasised. “With the right government supports, we can strengthen our position in this critical global market and continue to lead in the responsible production of minerals that power the technologies of tomorrow.”
